Wolverine Access Student Planner Evaluation

Picture

Summary:

  • Conducted interviews with students to expose their needs for a academic planner tool
  • Performed a heuristic evaluation on website
  • Created Mock-Ups of what could be changed to improve usability

Challenge:

This was an assignment for a course at the University of Michigan that I did in a group of three.  The company we were working with was actually the university itself.  We had to analyze a new student planner feature within the University's Student portal that basically allowed students to plan their entire academic career.

Process:

The first thing we did was create a Generalized Transition Network diagram which is similar to a flow chart.  We then created some personas and scenarios to get a better idea of the different types of users as well as their needs.  We also did a competitive evaluation with three other similar systems.  This was followed up with a heuristic evaluation as well as a vocabulary and visual analysis. We also created a survey to help understand what the students would want and what they would actually use. Finally we ran user tests on the system, analyzed the data and generated recommendations. This was a semester long group project which we finished in May of 2008. The deliverables I have included here are the Heuristic Evaluation as well as 3 personas and scenarios I created and the competitive analysis report. Feel free to check any of them out!
